I was watching television with my kids. The content seemed appropriate and we were on I believe … Roku. Then during a commercial break, this well-shot, well-invested, as in financed piece came up about HIV Management. I found myself cringing at the content, then angry that it was being shown to my kids on my TV, within what I thought was family content.

Gone are the days of 3 networks and a censorship panel. Many of us made fun of and complained about the censorship then, but now we have completely gone the other way. When you can’t read a school-offered book in a school board meeting because it’s sexually offensive, we have a real problem. I remember just a few short years ago, Muslims were campaigning to eliminate certain foods from being publicly available as they found it offensive to their beliefs. If we process this… the belief of a people group was being leveraged for what was publicly available outside the home. How is this messaging ok to come into the home and cross so many belief systems?

Now, we have this narrative that boring, straight, white racist , homophobes from the Christian Right are going to oppress the rights of all these sexualized agendas. When the Muslims took to the street to confront a group – the media even said it was White, Nazi, Nationalists…

It is occurring in Canada as well and the media is continuing to promote an idea that protesting the sexualization of youth is “Anti-Trans or Anti-Queer”. The events in Canada specified the combination of Christians and Muslims together combatting their ideologies being presented at schools. If the target isn’t the children… why is it focused on the schools?

While all of this was going on, I decided to take a light-hearted approach and cure HIV with a different message. It may be counter-intuitive in this current media-driven narrative… but it has merit. Instead of ever-sexualizing everything… how about we go back to modesty, civility, tolerance of a competing opinion? Note that there is a large difference between holding an opinion, sharing that opinion to a willing audience and cramming it down people’s throats – loudly and in inappropriate venues.

It’s hard to imagine that in today’s job marketplace, I could get reprimanded or fired for simply looking at a female with a tight sweater or plunging neckline… but be more highly considered for employment or promotion if I publicly divulge I perform fellatio. Nothing in the course of business or society through government should be dependent upon knowing what I do when I am naked.
